Großer Hundstod (2593 m) or Hundstod is one of the main peaks of the Steinernes Meer in the Berchtesgadener Alps and is located on the border between Germany and Austria (Bavaria/Land Salzburg). The name of the mountain refers to the Watzmann story, in which the dogs of the Watzmann fall from the Hundstod. Summit offers amazing views from Hochkalter, Watzmann, Hochkönig, Hoher Tauern etc.
Ascent: The hike starts from Pürzlbach praking lot (no parking fee). There is long (~9 Km) very easy walk to Ingolstädter Haus material station through Dießbach reservoir which can be also done on bike. From the material station to Ingolstädter Haus the path becomes steep and narrow and often goes through gravel.
Kleiner Hundstod: Easy marked trail from Ingolstädter Haus, the signpost says 1h.
Großer Hundstod: From the saddle point the path goes very steep quickly. In early summer there might be big steep snowfields which must be traversed. Hence crampons are recommended. We tried to avoid the snowfields as much as possible. In summer there should be no problem. The path is marked and clearly visible. Still you have to be experienced in T4 sections, sure footedness and no fear of heights required.
Descent: Same as descent skipping Kleiner Hundstod.
