Zigerstein is a 2001m high mountain in the Ammergau alps, which is part of Danielkamm, and lies on the southwest side of the more prominent peak Kohlbergspitze.
The part from schärte to the peak is probably on the higher end of T3 (or T4-). It also requires some easy climbing assisted by chains. In the beginning, we also have to traverse on steep grassy slopes, therefore the route is not appropriate when wet.
Reaching the start point: There are direct regional trains running from Munich to Bichlbach Almkopfbahn (Werdenfels ticket is the cheapest option). Please note that you will have to press the stop button before this stop, otherwise the train will not stop there.
Ascent: The route is very well marked, but still not easy to follow because it is narrow at places, and is surrounded by high grass. Therefore, it should not be tried in wet conditions. This route is not very popular, so you might not see any person before the schärte. The first part of the route is pretty steep. After a series of zigzag, it eventually becomes very flat. As you closer to schärte, you can already see Kohlbergspitze in middle and Zigerstein on the right. At the schärte, there is a signpost, however, it does not point to Zigerstein. Here keep going straight, and soon, you will find chains. This part is a bit exposed and requires Grade I climb assisted by chains. After the climb, turn right and traverse to the base of Zigerstein. The last part is exposed again, but has cable for safety.
Descent: From the peak to the schärte, the route is the same as ascent. At the schärte, turn right and follow the sign to Heiterwanger see. After around 150m, we see a stone with an arrow sign. Follow that to go down, instead of continuing on the path. You will come across many stones on the path with red marks, which are not always visible from top. There is a private cabin, where water refill options are available. From the cabin, there is a simple zigzag leads to Heiterwanger see. It is possible to swim in the lake.
