Marmolada Punta Penia (3343 m) is the highest mountain in Dolomites as also known as the "Queen of the Dolomites". The border between Veneto and Trentino runs over the Marmolada ridge. From the top, you can enjoy the views of Piz Boe, Monte Pelmo, Tofana, Civetta etc.
Ascent: The route starts from Rifugio Marmolada Castiglioni, you can stay overnight there. From the hut the summit is about 1400m elevation gain which can be easily done in one day. In the beginning the path is well marked till Rifugio Pian dei Fiacconi. From there you take the bifurcation on the right towards Forcella Marmolada. After the long traverse, you will arrive at the lower glacier. You will need crampons as some places are steep in the glacier.
After the glacier, the easy via ferrata (B) on the West ridge leads to the higher glacier. The glacier is not difficult and there are no crevasses. There is a hut at the top with 8 beds.
Descent: You need glacier equipments for the descent if you plan this route to descent . You can descent on the glacier on the North side which goes to an easy ferrata (B) before the big crevasse where the ferrata finishes. After the long traverse on the glacier you arrive at Rifugio Pian dei Fiacconi. From there follow the same path as ascent to the lake.
