Grosser Solstein is a 2541m high mountain in Nordkette. Even though the route is not technically difficult, it is quite long and requires stamina.

Reaching the start point: The route start point can be reached from Munich via Garmisch Partenkirchen by regional trains. The cheapest option is to buy werdenfels + innsbruck ticket. The trains are not very frequent, so one should plan the trip accordingly.

Ascent: The initial part of the route is on a wide mountain road, which alternates between flat and steep parts. After we cross the stream, the route is along a narrow zig-zag. At the end of it, we reach a meadow with sheep and a private hut. Solsteinhaus is already visible from there, and can be reached in 30-40 minutes. From the Solsteinhaus, the path is a steep zig-zag, but well marked. From the peak, there is a nice view of kleiner Solstein and the Nordkette ridge.

Descent: For the descent, walk along the ridge towards kleiner Solstein. After 10 minutes, you will see a signpost. Turn right from there and descent down. The route is full of gravel, and is also steep at points, so one needs to be careful. In wet conditions, this path should be avoided. This leads directly to Magdeburger huette, from there one could either walk along the bike road or take some shortcuts to shorten the route.
