Very scenic route to the third child of Watzmann, especially the views of Königssee and Obersee from the top is breathtaking. The route is very frequently done even in winter as skitour or snowshoes tour. However, safe avalanche conditions are required for this tour.
Ascent: From the Hammerstiel parking lot (parking fee 3 EUR) follow the wide forest road towards so called Benzinkurve. At around 1200m height, you leave the forest road on the right. Here you see signs for Watzmannkar. The path goes through forest and sometimes quite steep. In icy conditions, ski crampons would be necessary. After the forest soon the path goes through open terrain to Watzmannkar. There you see the most impressive 4th son of Watzmann in the front. The third child is just next to it on the left. Just before the summit the path becomes very steep, so if you're doing it in winter good ski-turn skills are necessary. From the top you can enjoy the summit panorama all around with blue lakes Königssee and Obersee. Be careful while standing on the summit, there are cornice in winter.
