Hochsalwand (1,625 m) is a mountain peak northeast of the Wendelstein high above the village of Brannenburg. On fine days, the summit cross offers a good view over Rosenheim, the Inn valley, Lake Chiemsee, Lake Simssee as well as to the neighbouring Chiemgau Alps and the Kaisergebirge. In contrast to the Wendelstein, the Hochsalwand is not so heavily frequented; there are several possibilities for climbing it. However, the ascent routes listed below require surefootedness, a head for heights and a good physical condition, despite markings and several easy climbing sections with wire rope safeguards. Only the route from the Reindleralm to the summit is easier, does not require any climbing sections or belayments and therefore does not require a head for heights, but does require surefootedness [wikipedia].
Ascent:
- Parking lot to Mittelberg: From the wandernparkplatz, follow the direction towards Hochsalwand. The path starts with a forest road. After walking about 1.2 Km, follow the Niggl-Steig (marked on sign post) on a slightly steeper trail. First peak of the route Mittelberg is not far, it can also be bypassed on the right though.
- Mittelberg to Rampoldplatte: From Mittelberg follow the direction towards Rampoldplatte via Schuhbräualm. The path is not difficult.
- Rampoldplatte to Hochsalwand: Follow the ridge from Rampoldplatte toward Hochsalwand. The path turns towards right for Hochsalwand marked with a red arrow on white stone. The path is very narrow and steep and there are cables for safety. Surefootedness is required. In early summer, there might still be snowfields. After arriving at the ridge turn left and peak is 5 min away.
Descent: Follow the direction towards Reindleralm. After arriving at Reindleralm the path goes steeply down on zig zag through forest (not difficult though). Last 3 Km is on the forest road.
