Walser Hammerspitze (aka Schüsser) is a 2170m high mountain in Schafalpengruppe, which offers beautiful views of Allgäu mountains.
The route starts and ends in Austria, so if you are coming from Munich, then you need to bring your passport or other documents that you usually carry for border crossing.
Reaching the start point: One can use regional trains to reach Oberstdorf from Munich. From Oberstdorf, take the bus No 1 to Kanzelwandbahn. This is the start point of the hike. Note that, the servus or bayern ticket does not cover the bus ride. Another thing to note is that, there is a 30% discount on bus ticket for a group of 10 or more people, so sometimes it might make sense to buy the group ticket, even if there are fewer than 10 people.
The route ends in Mittelberg, from there also one needs to take Bus No 1 to Oberstdorf.
Ascent: The first part of the route is along a wide bike road, which has gentle slope. After approximately 700m we come across a signpost, from here we exit from the wide path, and turn left (even though the bike road also goes to Kanzelwand). After 100m, we turn right and start ascending along the forest road. This route goes all the way to Gehrenspitze from where you can already enjoy the nice views of the valley.
We continue along the path, and soon we see the cable car station and Kanzelwand. The ascent to Kanzerlwand is not hard, and is sometimes crowded. From Kanzelwand we come down to the saddle point, and instead of going down further, we turn left towards Walser Hammerspitze. The peak looks daunting at first, but the path is not really difficult. The first part of the ascent is not very well marked, and there are a few places where you need to be careful to stay on the path (generally, at bifurcations stay left, and also look for steinmandl). The last part of ascent is very well marked. From the peak, there is a nice panorama view of Allgäu mountains and valley.
Descent: There is a signpost at the peak pointing towards Fiderepasshütte. This goes along a gentle grassy slope. We descent down to a deserted hut, from where we turn left and continue along the path all the way to Fiderepasshütte. From the Fiderepasshütte, one can see Oberstdorfer Hammerspitze as well as the beginning of Krumbacher Hohenweg. From the hut we come down, first along the same path which we used for ascent, and then along a zigzag path to go further down. The path continue all the way to the valley.
Variants:
- Slightly easier route which passes through Kanzelwand and the hut, but skips Walser Hammerspize
- Very long and challenging route passing through several peaks
