Schartschrofen is a 1968m high mountain in Tannheim alps offering nice views of Rote Flüh, Gimpel, Gehrenspitze as well as Haldensee.
Reaching the start point: Reaching the start point via public transport is not very efficient, but possible - one needs to take the regional train from Munich to Reutte in Tirol, and then take another regional train from there to Musau. Instead of Bayern ticket, one can buy the werdenfels ticket for this route which is a bit cheaper.
The other alternative is to take a train to Kempten, and then another train from there to Musau, which might be a bit faster. However, on this route one needs to use Bayern ticket (Don't forget to press the stop button before your stop).
Ascent: The route is well sign posted, and one should follow the signs to Musauer alm. The route starts from Musau train station. After crossing the field, we enter the forest, which is steep at places, but offers nice views of Musau. The lower forest ends on a bike route. however, after 10-15 meters on the bike route, we need to switch to the forest route again (follow the signs for Musauer alm, Otto Mayr hütte). This is a zig zag path, and finally ends in a wide road. After following the wide road for 100m, we reach a bifurcation - turn right here, and walk all the way to Musauer alm.
From Musauer alm continue along the wide road, until you reach a signpost for Otto Mayr hütte. Turn right and enter the forest path, which goes all the way to Otto Mayr hütte, and then continues to Füssener hütte. Now, the path becomes narrow, but still quite flat. After the forest is over, we cross a small stream, and see the rock in front of us. At one point you will see a bifurcation - we took the right path, which is easier (however, the left one also leads to the peak). From here follow the zig zag to the plateau. Tuen left from there, and follow the easy path to the peak. On a clear day, the peak offers nice views of Haldensee and nearby peaks such as Rote Flüh, Gimpel, Gehrenspitze. One can also continue to Rote Flüh along the B/C ferrata route.
Descent: From the peak follow the same path to come down to plateau. There is a signpost here - turn left and follow the path to Reintaljoch. Note that this path skips the Lauterspitze, which is slightly more difficult. From Reintaljoch turn left to reach Füssener jöchle, and then come back to Reintaljoch in order to continue to Otto Mayr hütte, and then to Musauer alm. From there the path is the same as ascent.
In my opinion, the walk to Füssener jöchle does not add much to the route unless one descends all the way to Grän. So, I would recommend to use the same path for descent as ascent.
