Jubiläumsgrat connects two famous mountains Zugspitze and Alpspitze from West to East. There are several peaks in the middle of the ridge: three Höllentalspitze and Vollkarspitze (2,618 m). The route is a high alpine tour and not a via ferrata route. In 2000/2001 winter and in autumn 2001 Vollkarspitze broken off in two rockfalls and fell into Matheisenkar. Since then the ascent to Vollkarspitze from West to East is very steep and slightly overhang is the key point of the whole ridge and is rated as via ferrata difficulty grade D. To do this ridge without cable car help, you need to be very very fit.
TOPO: TOPO
The tour starts from Obermoos, Ehrwald. You follow the steep path to Gamskar until Wiener Neustadter Hütte. From there an easy via fraata (A/B) leads to the summit Zugspitze. This part can also be skipped by taking the cable car.
From Zugspitze till Innere Höllentalspitze, the ridge is mostly unsecured and there are some sections which require scrambling with grade I and II and up to III- on exposed section. From Innere Höllentalspitze to Äußere Höllentalspitze, most of the difficult sections are secured with cable. There is a bivouac between Mittlere Höllentalspitze and Äußere Höllentalspitze. That can be used in emergency. From there till Vollkarspitze the path becomes difficult again even if it's secured with cables. From Vollkarspitze to Grieskarscharte it again becomes slightly easier.
From Grieskarscharte to Alpspitze, it's 150m gain on easy scrambling. You can also go left from Grieskarscharte to Höllental over an easy ferrata (B). Or you can go right to Stuibenhütte via Grieskar. From Alpspitze you can go down on easy ferrata (B) to Osterfelderkopf. Finally easy walk to Garmisch.
