Monte Cristallo (3,221 m) is one of the most important summits of Dolomites. It shouldn't be confused with Cristallo di Mezzo, a nearby summit which can be reached by via ferrata. To Monte Cristallo, unlike any other mountains in Dolomites, there is no hut, no cable car, no via ferratas, and no marked trail, and usually silence rules. The current route requires scrambling up to grade II+ at several places, some of them are exposed.

Ascent: The route starts at Passo Tre Croci. There is a hotel recently built where you can stay overnight. From the starting point follow the path towards Passo del Cristallo. In the beginning you have to go through forest and later it goes through steep gravel. Sometimes path is not so clear in the gravel part. You need approximately 2.5 hours to arrive here from the parking lot.

From Passo del Cristallo, turn left and follow the cairns. You will see an old short bridge (remains of first world war). The path goes through several ledges and couloir with easy scrambling (max II+) as long as you stay on the path. Some sections are exposed as well. Path is usually marked with cairns but its easy to miss the route sometimes. So you have to pay attention especially on the descent. From the parking you need approx. 4-4.5 hours to the summit.

Descent: Same as ascent.

Weather: Peak, Valley

Gear: Helmet is required, rope if you have less experienced hikers with you.
