Mönch (4,107 m) is the most climbed peak of the three peaks of the Berner Trilogy. Based on triumvirate "Eiger-Mönch-Jungfrau", there is a tale that the monster Eiger (ogre) wants to lay his lascivious paws on the Jungfrau, but the Mönch (monk) prevents him from doing so. Some postcards relating to this story can be bought at Grindelwald (the valley).
Ascent: The normal route to the summit is not very hard but depending on conditions, it can be very difficult or even impossible. Parts of ridge are very exposed and serious accidents are not uncommon. The upper part of the ridge is very narrow and exposed and corniced. Since the summit is usually crowded, you have to be careful that other climbers might fall/slide on you.
The route starts at Jungfraujoch which can be reached from Grindelwald by train / cable car. From Jungfraujoch, follow the prepared path to Mönchsjochhütte. The route starts with rock / mixed rock-ice-snow scrambling. The scrambling part never exceeds grade UIAA II. The last part of the route is on the rather long narrow and exposed ridge.
Descent: Same as ascent.
