Dear hiking buddies,

weather looks sunny and finally dry and not too hot this Sunday, so perfect for enjoying mountains together. Let´s go for a nice tour in Salzburgerland.

We will reach Salzburger Hochthron through a beautiful panoramic route and on the way we visit the Schnellenberger ice caves

Salzburger Hochtron belongs to hte "mysterious legendary Untersberg", a massive which is split up between Bavaria in Germany and Salzburg in Austria. It forms for the largest part a high plateau which starts in the west on average 1500-1600 meters and rises steadily towards the east, where it reaches its highest points at 1800-1900 meters average and then drops steeply, in many places with formidable cliffs, to the valley connecting Berchtesgaden and Marktschellenberg. Especially impressive and varied is the rise of Marktschellenberg over the Toni-Lenz-Hütte and the Thomas-Eder-Steig. Even from the wonderfully situated Toni Lenz hut you have a wonderful view over the Salzach valley to the Dachstein, the Tennengebirge and the Hohen Göll.

We keep going higher till we reach the ice caves. http://www.eishoehle.net/hoehle.htm

The Schellenberger Ice Caves are the only and largest open ice caves in Germany and are located at 1570 meters above sea level. They opens up in a tour magnificent halls and ice formations.

We will visit the ice caves with a guided visit that lasts 45 minutes.

After the spectacular ice visions we take the Thomas-Eder-Steig, well-secured way via ropes leading spectacularly over many stairs and through tunnels up to the karstic Untersberg plateau to the rise of the Mittagsscharte and finally to the summit cross over stony and gravelly terrain. For the ascent, sure-footedness, a head for heights and a good condition are necessary.

After the summit we will have a break at Hochalm hütte.

The we start our descent down to the valley through the Dopplersteig, an  interesting and scenic descent. From no other way you have a better view of the Salzburg and the Salzach.

We gonna leave Munich early since the tour takes about 7 hours and we need 45 min extra for visiting caves plus we want to have a break at the hut and last bus from the valley is at 18,35, so better to have right amount of time to enjoy a wonderful Sunday!

The total hike lenght would be about 12,2 km (1455 m altitude gain). Estimated hiking time 7 hours.
