In winter, it is recommended to use the same route to come down as the one to go up, unless you know what you are doing.
Hochgern has a very distinctive summit in Chiemgau Alps, with a mini house at the peak!
Reaching the start point: The best way is to take Meridian from Munich to Ubersee, and then take bus 9509 from there to Marquartstein. One can also take the same bus from Prien am chiemsee.
Ascent: The initial part of the route is along a wide road until Agergschwendtalm. From there one needs to follow a forest road, which leads to Hochgernhaus after a few zig-zags. The hut is open throughout the year barring extreme weather. From Hochgernhaus, one can enjoy a nice view.
The part from after the hut is a bit narrow, but not really steep or difficult, although in winter it could be a little challenging with snow. After 30 minutes or so, we reach a saddle point from where Chiemsee is visible. The last part towards the peak is steep, and in icy condition one must use spikes. 100 meters from the peak there is a mini hut, which also contains summit book.
