This is a long hike along two ridges:
We can take the bus from Oberau to Graswang Brandwiese and then start slowly on the Fürstenweg next to the Elmbau creek. After roughly 3.5 km we turn right onto a not too well marked path that leads up towards the Kuchelberg ridge and today's first ridge Kuchelbergspitze (2020 m) which we should reach after roundabout 2 hours. We continue along the ridgeline without a lot of change in altitude and pass the second peak, Kuchelbergkopf. Only thereafter the scrambling towards Kreuzspitze starts. On the subsequent way down to Kreuzspitzl it gets even more interesting with even two II scrambling spots. This third peak of the day marks roughly our half-distance point and the end of the first ridge. It is by the way a remarkable point because from here you can continue on four different ridges:
- North to Kreuzspitze where we came from
- East towards Friederspitz (long, mostly unmarked ridge scramble with several II spots)
- South towards Schellschlicht (I, bad rock quality)
- West down towards Neualmsattel and then up again on the Geierköpfe ridge
Of course we opt for the last choice. We continue on the Südhangsteig and leave it just south of the Eastern Geierköpfe peak, which we have to ascent without a clear path. Once on the ridge, we continue our march westward to reach Geierköpfe Hauptgipfel (main peak, 2161 m). This stretch is quite difficult once more with several scrambling spot up to II. Once at the peak, we have completed all technical difficulties of the day. What follows is a nice hike along the Western part of the ridge towards Geierköpfe Westgipfel, and then the longish descent that finally brings us to a camping site at Plansee.
While taking a swim in the beautiful lake we have to face the last difficulty of the day: We need to discuss and decide how to get back to Munich. Because there is no bus stop nearby we need to get slightly creative: We can hope to hitch a ride at the parking lot that brings us either to Reutte or to Linderhof, Ettal, Oberammergau or Oberau. If this is no choice, we have to order a taxi. Probably the route to Reutte is the better choice here because the train from there is slightly faster than from the other direction.
