The Hochwanner is Germany's second highest mountain (2744m, not to be confused with the Ammergauer Hochwanner). Unlike the overcrowded Zugspitze it is relatively unknown and so rarely frequented that it is partially trackless.

Starting at the parking lot (1240m) at end of the Salzbach in Leutasch we hike along the Normalweg in the south. At the saddle of the Predigtstein (2234m) and Hochwanner we turn right, and at ca. 2120m height (near Mitterjöchl) when the way starts to go downhill, we turn right again and follow the trackless way along the Kotbachkar. Later we follow Steinmandl and might scramble (I) through a few meters high chimney ( alternatively bypass it), where a helmet is mandatory. Then we hike through gravel (poles!) to the peak.

We return either over Steinernes Hüttl, Tillfussalm and Gaistalalm,

or over the optional Predigtstein, Rotmoosalm, Hämmermoosalm.
