Route Information
Watzmann (2,713 m) is the 3rd highest peak of Germany after Zugspitze and Hochwanner, and the highest peak that is completely inside Germany. Watzmann is not a solitary summit but a combination of 3 summits: Watzmann Hocheck (2,651 m), Mittelspitze (2,713 m) and Suedspitze (2,712 m). The current routes goes on the ridge from North to South covering all 3 summits.
Ascent: The hike starts from the parking lot close to Wimbachbrucke (7 EUR per day). Follow the direction towards Watzmannhaus, the sign post says 4.5 hours but it might take less depending on fitness. The path till Watzmannhaus is easy and nicely marked.
From Watzmannhaus to Hocheck is quite steep and some parts are exposed. Surefootedness and no fear of height is required. From the hut to Hocheck it might take 1-2 hours depending on your fitness. There is also a bivouac at Hocheck for emergency.
From Hocheck to the Mittelspitze the path is mostly secured with rope and some sections are quite exposed. It might take 45 min - 1.5 hours from Hocheck to Mittelspitze.
From Mittelspitze there are less ropes and the ridge is longer to Suedspitze. So if you're not comfortable or had issues in the first part, it's time to return back and try next time. For experienced mountaineer its time to enjoy the beautiful ridge with rewarding views of Berchtesgaden. It might take 1.5 hours to 3 hours from Mittelspitze to Suedspitze.
Descent: From Suedspitze the descent is very steep and might be slippery in snow. Be very careful in this part as there were many accidents in this part. Finally after a long descent in the steep rock, you arrive at a river bed. From there 12 km walk back to the parking lot.
Winter hike: This hike is possible all year. In winter conditions, alpine experience is required.
