The facts

Strictly speaking, the Hörnle is not just a mountain, but a trilogy of peaks, consisting of the front, middle and back Hörnle. The latter is the highest point of the hike, but the view from the middle peak is at least as beautiful. You're certainly not alone up here, though, because from Bad Kohlgrub the Hörnle lift takes tobogganers and Hörnlehütte visitors up there. Snowshoes are quite practical for the last part of the ascent, but not a must - Grödeln but at least advisable. For ascent and descent you should plan three to four hours.

The way

The ascent from the parking lot in Kappel is recommended if only to avoid the tourist crowds around the Hörnlebahn. But the path itself is also very beautiful: the forest path soon becomes a small meadow path. After fresh snow, orientation is quite difficult here, but often you can still sense the footprints of other hikers. The right path leads along a row of trees up the meadow to a pasture gate and then continues towards the forest. Once there, turn left and walk through a small wood until you reach another meadow with gentle switchbacks. Finally, the path widens again and leads to a small ridge. At a signpost, hikers have a choice: do they want to visit the middle Hörnle first or take the path directly to the rear Hörnle via the rustic Hörnlealm (closed in winter)? Regardless of the order: once at the top, none of the three peaks should be skipped - each one offers a very special view.

The highlight

If you can drag yourself out of bed at an early hour, you should definitely do so for this hike: Before the Hörnlebahn brings tourists up the mountain from nine o'clock, it is fantastically quiet at the top and you have the three Hörnlegipfel almost completely to yourself.

The approach

By train, the way to the Hörnle is somewhat arduous. From Munich, the regional train goes first to Murnau, but there hikers have to change trains and drive another 30 minutes to Unterammergau. To the starting point at the parking lot in Kappel it is then another half hour on foot - there is no bus. It is much more relaxed in this case by car: Via the A95 it goes from Munich in the direction of Garmisch and further on the B2 to Oberau. Turn right and drive via Oberammergau to Unterammergau. Shortly after leaving the town, you will find the hikers' parking lot on the right-hand side.
