At Baden train station we go to the station square to the central signpost location to the terrace above the Limmat. You could now use the glass lift to float down between the trees to the Limmat and take the riverside path to the right to the wooden bridge. But we stroll right through the pedestrian zone into the pretty old town , walk through the city gate and down the stairs towards the Limmat, past the houses Zum green boot from 1548 and Zum Güggel from 1647.
Over the covered wooden bridge we get to the other side of the Limmat, past the Landvogtei Castle - the modern extension to the museum is mockingly called "Melonenschnitz". This houses the Historical Museum of the City of Baden with a rich historical collection. Important prehistoric and Roman finds from the city and district of Baden are also on display.
After the underpass, we climb next to the rocky foothills of the Lägerngrat on the stepped path to Schartenfels Castle . Here the route splits into two sections of almost equal length:
Tricky, 1h15:
The exciting ridge path climbs up to the right at the Schartenfels restaurant. This section is rocky, strenuous, quite exposed in parts and dangerous when wet. Not recommended for families with children or hikers with dogs. For those with a head for heights and surefootedness, on the other hand, it is an alpine adventure that is not to be expected in the Mittelland
