Thaneller (2,341 m) is really popular summit due the magnificent views of beautiful Plansee and Heiterwanger see as well as Zugspitze massif, Tannheimer mountains and Allgäu alps. There is an easier route (T3) to the summit from south side from Bergwang. However, a more challenging and exposed route goes through the northwest flank via so called Werner-Riezler-Steig. The current route combines both of them with Werner-Riezler-Steig on ascent.

Ascent: The starting point of the route is the train station Heiterwang-Plansee. You follow the signs towards Thanellerkar. From Thanellerkar the signpost on the big rock says still 2.5 hours to the summit. In the beginning you have to ascent on steep scree, before arriving to the north wall of the mountain. Werner-Riezler-Steig starts here, the path is well marked throughtout with red dots. Some of the sections are secured with steel cable but not everywhere. Some sections require scrambling up to grade I. In early summer, there might still be old snowfields so taking crampons is a good idea. Also a helmet is recommended in this section.

Descent: From the summit follow the signs to Bergwang. There are no challenging sections on this part, and the trail is easy (T3).  This route goes to the starting point via Hochalm.

Webcam: Bergwang, although the summit is not visible in the webcam, still good to get an idea about the conditions.
