Route Information

Hochvogel is one of the rarest mountains that you can observer for almost every mountain in Allgau because of its shape. I was watching a documentary about this mountain and it can collapse in near future. That's why I decided to plan a trip to Hochvogel.

If you plan to make the ascent in one day, the best way is to bike and hike. However, we took the morning bus bus from Hinterstein to Giebelhaus. From Giebelhaus the sign post says 6 hours to Hochvogel which made us think that we would have to walk the boring asphalt from Giebelhaus to Hinterstein on the way back.

Ascent: We started right from the bus stop Giebelhaus. In the beginning you have to walk 45 minutes on the asphalt. Soon the path to Hochvogel diverges to the left. If you have bike with you, you can leave the bike here and follow trail 427. The trail further goes a bit down until the waterfall the it goes up through the deep forest. On the way, you will see many waterfalls. Soon you will arrive at Unteres Bargundlealpe. From there the trail continues to Prinz-Luitpold-Haus.

From the hut trail goes mostly over steep gravel, soon the trail becomes rocky and some sections are secured with the rope. Soon after crossing the ridge, you will arrive at Kreuzpitze (2367 m).

After Kreuzpitze, the path goes down to a saddle, this part is also rocky and some sections secured by rope. From the saddle the summit is 1 hour. The last part involves scrambling upto grade II.

Descent: First part till the saddle is the same as ascent. From the saddle, we turned right. This part is full of steep gravel and sometimes snow even in summer. There is a rope to assist in the steep part. After approximately 40 minutes, you will cross the ridge and soon you will arrive at the hut. From there follow the same path as ascent.
