One of the most rewarding tours in Bayern Alps is the ascent through the wild Alpgarten. The Alpgarten is a wild, untouched valley; a playground for chamois, who live here undisturbed. The few hikers who climb from Bayerisch-Gmain on the Alpgartensteig to the Schlegelkopf, they pay little attention. A nice, narrow path leads along the Wappbach in the wilderness of the alpine garden.

The first steep rock steps outcropped the Alpgartensteig on a rib, partly help short wooden stairs and wire ropes, and in lighter terrain you finally reach the plateau between Schlegelmulde and Schlegelkopf. The managed Schlegelalm is not right on the way, but the detour costs only a few minutes. Once we leave the Alpgarten we reach a steep grassy slope and across a field of pine trees till we get out onto the plateau of the Lattengebirge. Since we have now the greatest effort behind us, we can treat ourselves before crossing the mountain stock right below in the Gasthaus Schlegelmulde a short rest break. Then we hike back to the main path and through a broad pine field we reach the Hochschlegel (1688m). A bit wavy, it goes along the ridge till on the right path we can make a detour to Karkopf (1739 m), which rewards us as the highest peak of the Lattengebirge with a magnificent view of the Berchtesgaden Alps and the Steinberge. Here we can admire the panorama of the Berchtesgaden summit with Hohem Göll, Hohem Brett, Watzmann and Hochkalter. Then we descend into another saddle that gives us the opportunity to make a detour to the Dreisesselberg (1680 m). Afterwards the route goes south-and then to the east where we can climbs behind two ditches to the rest area (information board) at the well-visible, legendary Steinernen Agnes. It is definitely a must.

Steinerne Agnes is a standalone 15m high Obelisk of crumbly Ramsaudolomite in the Lattengebirge. According to legend, Agnes was a chaste and very attractive maid, who was persecuted by the devil. When the bad guy threatened to reach her, she was graciously turned to stone, so that she could no longer be reached by the devil. Related to this there is another legend known as Die Schlafende Hexe i.e. the "sleeping witch". It is a very striking mountain form between Bad Reichenhall and Berchtesgaden where several peaks form a ridge, whose silhouette resembles a lying witch. https://www.berchtesgaden.de/berge-gipfel/lattengebirge/schlafende-hexe
