Hochgrat (1832 m) is the highest mountain in Nagelfluhkette range. The peak offers amazing views of Allgäu alps like Hoher Ifen, Höfats. Usually the summit is crowded in summer in good weather because of the cable car.
Ascent: The starting point of the hike is Hochgratbahn station in the valley. Which can be arrived by car or lengthy public transport (check the Directions section below). The trail goes through forest in the beginning with beautiful waterfalls on the way. After walking approx. 3 Km, the trail becomes steep. As you approach the ridge the trail becomes narrow and steep, and there are cables for security. When you arrive at the ridge, turn left for Rindalphorn (which is 50 min according to the sign post). If you are tired, this peak can be skipped, and you can directly start for Hochgrat. After walking for ~15 min, you will arrive at the summit.
Descent: Continue walking on the ridge, you will arrive soon at the cable car station. The food in the hut was rather expensive and not so tasty (at least the one I ordered). There is another hut (5 minutes from the cable car) which might be another possibility for lunch. The trail becomes easy and broad from here, and there are numerous waterfalls on the way.
