The Goetheweg is one of the most beautiful and spectacular hiking trails in Austria. The Goetheweg, which was renamed in 1977 as Hermann Buhl Weg, was given its original name again in 2002. Hermann Buhl was an Austrian mountaineer and is considered one of the best climbers of all time. He was particularly innovative in applying Alpine style to Himalayan climbing. His accomplishments include:

  • 1953 First ascent of Nanga Parbat, 8,126 metres (26,660 ft) (solo and without bottled oxygen). On the way back from the summit he was forced to stand erect on a rock ledge for the entire night at 8000m altitude, in order to survive until the following morning.
  • 1957 First ascent of Broad Peak, 8,051 metres (26,414 ft).

Before his successful Nanga Parbat expedition, 31 people had died trying to make the first ascent.

Ascent: Starting at the Innsbruck train station, follow the steep trail toward Seegrube cable car station. There is alos a zig-zag version, which is slightly less steep. The two paths meet often, so you can switch to either whenever you want. You can have food in the restaurant with views over the Inn Valley, before you alternately walk uphill to the first peak: Hafelekarspitze.

Along the ridge of the Nordkette the path alternates between the south and north side of the mountain. While you are rewarded on the north side with breathtaking views of the wild, untouched Karwendel, the south side shows the Inn Valley. A very fitting statement here would be "so close and yet so far.", Because the Inntal feels close enough to touch. But if you then look down into the depths, then you prefer to stick to one of the steel cables that are attached to the rock walls and stay to look rather a moment to enjoy the view to the fullest. We also covered two additional peaks on the way: Gleirschpitze and Mandlspitze. For these two peaks surefootedness and no fear of height is required.

Descent: With a length of about 5km, the path leads to the Pfeishütte. Alternatively you can descend via the Arzler Scharte and choose the way back via the Arlzer Alm. From Pfeishütte, you still have approx 19 Km to cover before arriving to Scharnitz train station.
