From the Karwendelhaus, go back a bit and then turn right in front of the outbuilding. Immediately you go over steeper rocky terrain (wire ropes) past the avalanche barriers of the Karwendelhaus. The path flattens out again and you go through mountain pines and meadow slopes into the lower Schlauchkar. You leave the turnoff to the Hochalmkreuz on the left and then you have to be careful. Shortly after, a narrow path branches off to the "Brendelsteig", which you follow to the right.
You go down a bit and then on the other side of the valley to the west, first flat, then slightly uphill again to the start of the Brendelsteig. Clear trail tracks now lead over a steep meadow and mountain pine slope (partly wire ropes) to a broad ridge, which is the northernmost offshoot of the western Ödkarspitze. The trail turns left and follows the ridge more steeply to the south. The climb now becomes significantly rockier, a steep rise is bypassed on the right, slightly exposed (wire ropes). The path now follows the steep ridge once again before turning right and reaching the western flank of the Ödkarspitzen in a flat, rocky traverse (no wire ropes here). The path climbs southwards, first flatter and then steeper, on a path that is more pleasant to walk. The path turns left and leads in ideally laid out serpentines up the wide, west-facing summit slope - the western Ödkarspitze, which is not very prominent as a summit (2712 m; 3 hours from the Karwendelhaus). Here you can see the rest of the path along the ridge, or slightly below it.
Now climbing ever eastwards, after a short, steeper ascent, you reach the summit of the middle Ödkarspitze (2745 m.) and soon after, after a section secured with a wire rope, the eastern Ödkarspitze (2738 m.). Now comes the most exposed section of the ridge, which leads steeply down to the Schlauchkarsattel, mitigated by a few wire ropes. Even on the way there, the summit structure of the Birkkarspitze attracts attention.
From the saddle, you continue eastwards, pass the Birkkarhüttl, which is always open and offers protection in bad weather, and climb a short, steeper ascent with the help of wire ropes. Alternating between flatter crossings and pleasant ascents, the red-marked path (partly wire ropes) leads without any orientation difficulties to the highest point of the Karwendel mountains (2749 m; 1:30 hours from the western Ödkarspitze).
For the descent, you first go back to the Schlauchkarsattel. Here, before a prominent red marker, you turn right (unmarked) and follow the initially steep climbing tracks into the upper Schlauchkar. Here you are still in the not entirely safe area of falling rocks. Soon the descent turns slightly to the right and also becomes a little flatter. Nevertheless, surefootedness is still required. Alternating between scree and rockier passages, you reach the middle part of the Schlauchkar, where the now clearer path leads down through wide scree slopes more quickly. Finally, the cirque becomes flatter and greener again and the path becomes more pleasant to walk again. You pass the turnoff to the Brendelsteig and reach the Karwendelhaus on a familiar path.
