Seasons: April-May, late September-November
In 2025 my route to Island Peak avoided the ridge that you often read in reports and went straight to the peak. I I have the impression this modification is probably due to weather changes and makes the route safer but harder.
I also have the impression Lobuche East and for sure Mera Peak are less technically demanding 6.000m in the region. On the other side Mera Peak is 300m higher.
There were many 50+ degree slopes with mixed ice+rock climbing. And then rapelling down with a figurative eight.
Key success factors: Stay healthy as much as possible, cope with the cold lodges (down sleeping bag, always be well dressed), have a good sherpa guide and reliable tour operator, acclimatize well by e.g. treks to EBC, Kala Patthar, Chukkung RI, spending 2 nights at Namche and 2 nights at Dingboche on the way up, staying hydrated. Obviously top fitness and experience with fix rope climbing and rappelling is beneficial.
Key equipment: Double boots such as La Sportiva Spatnik, very thick down jacket, down sleeping bag, gloves for working on the rope at -20oC, hand warming pads to put inside the gloves, cream for protecting the lips, medicine for sore throat, coughing, electrolytes, merino layers. A complete equipment list can be found at websites of tour operators.
Sample itinarery below - for good acclimatization i find important to spend 2 nights at Namche Bazaar 3400m and 2 nights at Dingboche 4400m (explore the cafes there, they offer free wifi, charging, good espresso and good movies). Bear in mind that most daily treks involve considerable ups and downs and the elevation gain is more than the altitude difference of between origin and destination

Overall, the trek up to EBC is magnificent.
Practicalities: Add 2-3 buffer days due to frequent flight cancellations to and from Lukla (flights and the companies are a mess) No internet above Namche except if you are Nepalese and have the Nepal Telecom SIM card but wifi can be bought at the lodges for ca. 1000NRS / night. Bottled water can be found during most of the trek at reasonable prices (exception Gorakshep), hence i dont find necessary water purifcation of filtering solutions. Bringing tea bags or coffee isnt a bad idea. The period i did the trek, wearing trail running shoes would have been ok everyday except obviously the summit day.
