A scenic mountain tour in impressive Saalachtal where Nature did a very nice job letting you get to experience interesting geological highlights like gorgeous gorges along with peaks offering very open views to the lovely landscapes this area and surroundings offers.

We start our hike crossing Seisenbergklamm where you will be surrounded by towering limestone cliffs and fascinating rock formations, several waterfalls and the sound of rushing water adds to the tranquil atmosphere. The area surrounding the gorge is rich in biodiversity, including various types of trees, ferns, and wildflowers. We keep going up direction Hirschbichl that marks the borders with Germany and Klausbachtal. We take a detour towards west going through the Litzlalm alpine pastures. Located between 1,300 and 1,500 meters above sea level, the pasture area of the Litzlalm and Litzlwiese is about 2 km² in size. In the summer months, this area is shared by 8 alpine farmers (4 from St. Martin near Lofer, 3 from Weißbach near Lofer and 1 from Bischofswiesen) with their up to 90 head of cattle. Due to its wonderful location and the beautiful view of the surrounding mountains, especially the Mühlsturzhörner of the Reiter Alm (also known as the “Ramsauer Dolomites), the Litzlalm has served as a filming location for many local films and series. Now the path to the Litzlkogel branches off to the right. The narrow path leads steeply upwards under steep rock faces. One section is even secured with steel cables and exudes a high alpine flair. We finally reach the summit of the Litzlkogel (1625 m) through dense mountain pine stands. It is maybe not that famous nor particularly high but it is a wonderful vantage point. Behind the summit cross, the striking peaks of the Reiter Alm rise up, and the view sweeps across the Klausbachtal over the Hintersee to the Untersberg. To the south, the view extends over the Kammerlingalm and the upper part of the Kallbrunnalm, which is closed off by the striking rock formation of the Hochkranz, the Ammergau Alps, the Lofer and Leogang Steinberge, and the Steinernes Meer. We get down from the peak and we probably stop at Litzlalm for a drink and recharging break. Finally we go further Eiblkapelle and we go down till the valles crossing Wildenbach Gorge that has also to offer us nice views to waterfall and rocky formations plus the opportunity to spot chamois. We walk along the rushing stream through the densely wooded valley and cross the stream on a bridge. This is where the interesting section begins high above the water: sometimes on one side, sometimes on the other, the wide path follows the water downhill, sometimes close to the wall, until the gorge opens up to the Saalach valley near the hamlet of Obsthurn. We finally head to our cars in Weißbach.
