User provided description:

This is based on the SAC snowshoeing route "Von Melchsee-Frutt Rotsandnollen 2700 m".

Just to let you know, the highest point is a little further up at 2,700 metres, and the ascent and descent are also worth noting at just over 800 metres.

'Technical data' (according to HB):

  • Ascent: 841m
  • Descent: 841m
  • Duration: 6 hours (!)

This roughly corresponds to the information provided by the SAC.

The SAC says:

Feel the width

The Rotsandnollen might not be the most prominent, but it's the highest point in the mountain range that separates the Engelberg valley from the Melchtal. Even in the height of winter, the ascent offers plenty of sunshine and a permanent panorama in terrain that's perfect for snowshoe hikes. You can always turn around and head back to Tannalp, or if you're feeling adventurous, you can make a quick circular hike in the wide-open terrain.

Ascent:

Head on the signposted winter hiking trails from Melchsee-Frutt eastwards to Tannalp (a mountain farm). Then, go northwards up to below the Barglen rocky ridge, and follow it to its north-eastern end, where you'll hit the ridge at Tannenrotisand (2523 m). Then you'll reach the broad ridge crest, which is first flat, then steeper up to the 2700-metre summit of the Rotsandnollen.

Descent:

You can either return from Rotsandnollen along the same route, or if you're coming from Murmoltereneggen, you can continue along the south-east flank of Barglen, descending steadily to the western end of the Tannalpsee. Then it's just a short walk on the winter hiking trail to Melchsee-Frutt.
