User provided description:
The Längentaler Weißer Kogel, standing at 3,217 meters, is a popular ski touring destination in the Stubai Alps. This moderately challenging tour spans approximately 19.5 kilometers round-trip, with an elevation gain and loss of about 1,600 meters each. The average duration for the ascent is around 4.5 to 5 hours.
Route Overview:
Starting Point: The tour begins at the Alpengasthof Lüsens (1,630 m), where a fee-based parking area is available.
Initial Ascent: From Lüsens, proceed nearly level through the broad Lüsenstal valley toward the imposing face beneath the Lüsener Ferner glacier. Near the material cableway of the Westfalenhaus, turn right and ascend a steep forest ridge on the left side of the Längentaler Bach gorge, using tight switchbacks until reaching the plateau near the Längentaleralm.
Through the Valley: Continue relatively flat in the center of the valley, passing several steps with the Westfalenhaus situated on the right. At the junction leading to the Hoher Seeblaskogel, stay in the main valley and ascend southward toward the Längentalerjoch, situated between the Hinterer Brunnkogel and Weißer Kogel.
Final Ascent: Before reaching the Längentalerjoch, veer right beneath the glacier tongue in a wide arc toward the Bachfallenkopf. Bypass this peak on the left to enter the expansive glacier basin of the Längentaler Ferner. Ascend in wide switchbacks over the gently inclined glacier slope to just below the north ridge, which descends to the right of the summit. If snow conditions permit, the final steep section near the ridge leads around the summit from the left to the metal cross. Often, a ski depot is established just below the summit, with the final steps to the highest point of the Längentaler Weißer Kogel completed on foot.
Descent: The descent follows the same route as the ascent.
Safety Considerations:
While the risk of crevasse falls is minimal with proper track selection, there is potential avalanche danger both in the narrow entrance valley and on the steep sections.
Additional Information:
Accommodation Options: The Westfalenhaus and Alpengasthof Lüsens serve as bases for numerous enjoyable ski tours and high-altitude ski tours in the area.
Equipment: Standard ski touring equipment is required; high-altitude touring gear is typically unnecessary.
This tour offers a rewarding experience for ski mountaineers seeking a moderately challenging ascent with stunning panoramic views in the Stubai Alps.
