Wild and rugged: challenging traverse of the Geierkopf massif in the Ammergau Alps
The Geierköpfe (2,161 m) appear as a steep, forbidding rock bastion from the Ammer Valley far below and are just the right terrain for experienced mountaineers to practice their sure-footedness and head for heights.
Even the approach via the Neualpsattel is a somewhat daring mountain trail and requires a good sense of direction in the mountain pine terrain. The reward for your efforts is one of the most beautiful mountain tours in the Ammergau Alps, which is also not overcrowded on weekends. The assessment of veteran alpine author Dieter Seibert is still relevant today: “The crossing is relatively rarely undertaken, although it is an interesting tour (...)”. One minor drawback is that the limestone on the long rocky ridge is not particularly compact. Therefore, you need to check all handholds and footholds on the short climbing sections, which never exceed UIAA difficulty level II, to ensure they are secure. In addition, the tour should only be attempted in stable mountain weather, i.e., never when there is a risk of thunderstorms.
Directions
At the parking lot, follow the sign for Geierköpfe. After a few hundred meters, a sign points to the right out of the stream bed. Follow the narrow path to Neualpsattel. Soon, a faint trail branches off to the right, leading through mountain pines toward the ridge. Cross the open terrain below the east summit to the ridge. Now comes the first key section: a rock gully leads down to the saddle and up over a rock step on the other side. Continue along the ridge until you descend southward before the break and traverse to the large saddle. Do not follow the cairn there, but traverse westward on the ledge. Then turn right and head for the ridge. Go around a rock head and reach the main summit. Finally, descend southwest and follow the ridge to the west summit. Now head south to the fork, turn left here and return to the Neualpsattel.
