The Dents du Midi are a three-kilometer-long mountain range located in the Chablais region of Valais ( canton of Valais ) in Switzerland .
Dominating the Val d'Illiez and the Rhône Valley to the south, they face Lake Salanfe , an artificial reservoir , and are part of the Giffre Massif geological formation . Its seven peaks are, from northeast to southwest: the Cime de l'Est, the Forteresse, the Cathédrale, the Éperon, the Dent Jaune, the Doigts, and the Haute Cime . They are composed primarily of limestone , notably sandy limestone in its upper reaches.
Accessible from Champéry , Les Cerniers, Mex , Salvan, and Vérossaz , the Dents du Midi have been climbed since the late 18th century . It has also been possible to hike around them since 1975. The mountain range is a true local symbol and is used both to promote the Val d'Illiez and by various brands and associations in the region.
