Route Information
Brünnstein is a 1634 m high mountain in the Bavarian Prealps in the Mangfall Mountains near the Sudelfeld region. It is a limestone reef elongated in east-west direction, which drops steeply to the south and very steeply to the north. The Brünnstein is one of the most popular excursion mountains in the region.
Peterskopf (main summit, 1634.2 m): The highest point is not accessible to tourists; one reaches it from the eastern summit through a not harmless scramble along the exposed ridge; also the view is not worth the climb. The planned route here goes to Brünnstein only.
Ascent: From parking follow the wide forest road to Brünnsteinhaus. From there an easy via ferrata (difficult: A+) leads to the summit. In my opinion via ferrata set is not required but Helmet is highly recommended. If you don't like via ferrata, there is an alternative ascent leads to summit (T3), you can find more details here. The ferrata is not difficult but sure-footedness and no fear of heights is required. There is an interesting narrow passage through the mountains. From the hut to the peak, it takes about 40 min according to the sign post.
Descent: From the peak take alternate descent to Brünnsteinhaus. The path is steep and sometimes secured with cables. From the hut follow the same path as ascent.
On the eastern flank of the massif is the Brünnsteinhaus (1345 m), which is open almost all year round and also offers overnight accommodation. It can be reached from Oberaudorf (driveway from Rechenau 790 m, in winter challenging toboggan run), from Kiefersfelden (car park Hintere Gießenbachklamm 780 m), from Tatzelwurm (waterfall) or from Gasthaus Rosengasse.
