Important: During winter or early spring, one might prefer to come back the same way as the one taken to go up. The route from Schachen to Reintal is steep and slippery.

Schachehaus (1866m) is a mountain hut with awesome views of wetterstein mountains and Reintal. It was built in 1870 along with the Schachen castle, which was used by king Ludwig II as a royal house.
There are three main routes to Schchenhaus, which start from Elmau, Garmisch Partenkirchen and Mittenwald respectively. This route (from Garmisch Partenkirchen) is mose public transport friendly.
Reaching the start point: From Munich one can take a regional train to Gramisch Partenkirchen. It is possible to walk from there to route start point. Alternatively, one can take bus no 2 from hauptbahnhof to Skistadion (route start point).
Ascent: The initial part of the route passes through Partnachklamm. One could either pass by klamm or go over it. Please note that it requires a fee (approximately 5 EUR/person) to pass through the klamm.
After the klamm, we start gaining elevation quickly. The ascent route is known as Kaelbersteig. After a series of wooden stairs, we reach a relatively flat path. The slope is gentle here and continues almost all the way to Schachen except the last few meters.
Descent: For the descent, we first go down to Reintal. This part is steep, and parts of this route are secured with cable. There is a nice waterfall on the way. This part also has nice views of Reintal valley and Wetterstein mountains. After Reintal the route is relatively flat, but is quite long before we reach Partnachklamm again. Please note that the klamm closes at 6 pm, so plan your pace accordingly.
