## **Circular Alpine Tour: Nesselwängle – Rote Flüh – Friedberger Klettersteig – Schartschrofen**
This demanding and varied alpine circuit in the **Tannheim Mountains** combines a scenic summit ascent with an airy ridge traverse and a classic via ferrata section. It offers a full day of mountain adventure with constantly changing terrain and outstanding panoramic views.
### **Route Overview**
* **Start/Finish:** Nesselwängle (1136 m)
* **Summits:** Rote Flüh (2108 m), Schartschrofen (1968 m)
* **Via ferrata:** Friedberger Klettersteig (Grade B)
* **Total duration:** approx. 5–6 hours (excluding breaks)
* **Difficulty:** Challenging alpine hike with via ferrata section
---
### **Ascent to Rote Flüh (2.5–3 hours)**
From Nesselwängle, follow the well-marked trail up to the rustic Gimpelhaus (1659 m). Continue steeply to the Judenscharte (1970 m), then climb the final rocky section to the summit of Rote Flüh.
The last meters include an easy scramble (UIAA I), rewarded with breathtaking views over the **Haldensee**, the striking Gimpel, and the surrounding Allgäu and Lechtal Alps.
---
### **Traverse to Schartschrofen**
Descend from Rote Flüh via the exposed **Friedenssteig** to the Gelbe Scharte (1900 m). This section is often underestimated:
* Partially secured, but includes exposed and unprotected passages
* Requires excellent sure-footedness and a head for heights
From the Gelbe Scharte, ascend via the **Friedberger Klettersteig** (Grade A/B–B) to the summit of Schartschrofen. The via ferrata is relatively short (20–30 minutes), but involves steep, airy terrain with sections of loose rock.
⚠️ **Important:** Helmet and full via ferrata equipment are strongly recommended.
---
### **Descent (approx. 2.5 hours)**
From Schartschrofen, descend via Hallergernjoch and the Adlerhorst back to Nesselwängle. The trail is steep in parts but technically moderate.
---
## **Character & Highlights**
* A classic “test tour” for hikers progressing into via ferrata terrain
* Unique feature: the via ferrata is often climbed **on descent**, which is unusual
* Continuous panoramic views across the Tannheim Valley
* Combination of hiking, scrambling, and secured climbing
---
## **Difficulty & Requirements**
* **Overall difficulty:** Moderate to difficult alpine tour
* **Via ferrata:** Grade B (mostly A/B)
* **Between Gelbe Scharte & Rote Flüh:** short climbing sections up to UIAA I-, partially unsecured
* **Skills required:**
* Sure-footedness
* Head for heights
* Basic via ferrata experience
---
## **Safety Notes**
* The ridge between Gelbe Scharte and Rote Flüh is **not officially part of the via ferrata** but frequently used—treat it as a serious alpine section.
* The Schartschrofen area is prone to **rockfall**, especially in warm or busy conditions.
* Due to its **south-facing exposure**, the route is often snow-free early in the season—but can be very hot in summer.
---
## **Alternative Access**
You can shorten the tour by starting near Grän and taking the lift toward the Füssener Jöchle, approaching the Schartschrofen from above (approx. 45 minutes to the summit).
---
## **Summary**
This tour is ideal if you’re looking for a **compact but adventurous alpine day**: a rewarding summit climb, an exposed ridge traverse, and a short
but exciting via ferrata—all set in one of Tyrol’s most scenic mountain groups.
