The Ebner Joch (1957m) is a superb panoramic peak with great views of Achensee, Rofan, Karwendel and the Inn valley. It is quite easy to reach via the Berggasthof Astenau-Alpe (1483m, open April - November), halfway up the mountain and about 1 hour below the summit. On the way back the sundeck invites you to stop. This is a great panoramic tour in the Rofan am Achensee, which is rarely busy above the Astenau Alpe hut.

Route

We follow the forestry road into the forest. After a few minutes the trail turns right. Follow the signs to Astenau Alpe.  We already have beautiful views of the Inn valley.

After a little over an hour we reach a beautiful clearing and a little later the Astenau Alpe, with its chapel and great view of the Zillertal Alps as well as our summit, only an hour above the Astenau.

We pass the Astenau Alpe on the left - look out for the sun terrace - and follow the signs bearing right uphill. The path now becomes steeper and rockier, and we have to tackle two steeper parts. Then the climb becomes more comfortable again.

About half way to the summit we reach a junction. To the right it is steeper and faster, to the left easier and a little longer. We follow the path to the left, passing a smaller summit cross, and climb between the mountain pines up to the summit, from from which we enjoy a great view of Achensee and all the peaks around. Although it is quite rocky, there are some nice patches of grass to rest on.

The descent takes the same route as the way up.

Option for the ambitious: A little below the Astenau-Alpe (after stopping for refreshments) you can also descend the path to the left, well signposted, in the direction of the "Kanzelkehre". This way back is a bit longer and not so well marked out. The "Kanzelkehre" is unfortunately "only" the big bend on the main road, not a vantage point. But from here you can return to the car on a forest road. In addition, always follow the signs "Kanzelkehre" and at the main road right slightly uphill on the forest road up to the car.
