Route Information
Großes Wiesbachhorn (3564 m) is the 9th highest mountain in Austria. Its entirely free-standing firn-capped summit forms the main peak of the Fusch/Kaprun chain and is often viewed in Alpine literature as a rival of the Großglockner. The great slope on its eastern and southeastern side plunges 2,418 metres to the Fuscher Ache - the greatest height difference between mountaintop and valley floor in the Eastern Alps [wikipedia].
Ascent: The overall difficulty of the the tour is T4(I). The hike starts from the Kesselfall parking lot. Follow the path 31 towards Mooserboden. The path initially goes through forest then traversing along the lake (T3). It's also possible to skip this part of the hike by taking bus/cable car (see Note below).
From Mooserboden to Heinrich Schwaiger Haus the path is very steep and there are some ropes for safety. Although the path is not dangerous but you should be very careful here as a fall can be fatal here. The views of lakes and the glacier are just amazing.
Shortly after leaving the hut, you have to climb a short via ferrata (grade C) chimney. For less experienced hikers, it's a good idea to use via ferrata set. After approx. 100 m climbing a steep part, you will see glaciers on both side and also the summit cross for the first time. From here the path can be icy even in summer depending on the conditions, you might need ice axe and crampons. From this section to the top is very steep and sometimes exposed. Any mistake can lead to fall in one of the glaciers.
Descent: Same as ascent. You can also stay at the hut overnight.

Note: You can skip the first part of the hike to Mooserboden by taking a combination of bus and cable-pulled plateau. They operate only in summer and the last bus from Mooserboden is at 5pm. You can find more information here.
